Let’s face it, buying presents can be expensive! Showing people you care doesn’t need to break the bank. We’ve rounded up some of our favourite DIY’s that make excellent gifts, impressing everyone from your mum to your trivia teammates. Best of all, these gifts are a) easy to make and b) will score you some serious brownie points.
Candles are a present staple, but why spend all your coin when you can just make your own? Candles aren’t actually that tricky to make! All you need is some wax (soy, beeswax, or paraffin), some essential oils (to make it smell delicious), a wick, and a boiler. Containers to display your masterpiece are also super cheap (bulk buy mason jars for a mod twist), and you’ve got a present your Aunt will be bragging about at book club for months to come.
If you have a creative flair (or, enthusiasm!) handmade coasters are a great way to show your loved one you care, all without the hefty price tag. There are tones of tutorials online, and you can make coasters from everything from tiles, to bottle caps, to wood! Plus, every morning as they place their mug down, they’ll see your creation and think of you (and your gift-giving expertise).
3. Framed photograph
If you’re not super creative and can’t paint (and even Bob Ross tutorials can’t help), a framed picture of you and your gift receiver is an easy way to add a sentimental touch. Go the extra mile and hand paint the frame, mixing both sentiments with your (very limited) artistic talents. Note, this present only works if you’re pretty tight with who you’re giving it to (a framed picture of you might be lost on your nail technician – but hey, you do you).
4. Knit something
Knitting is cool now. Seriously. Not just for your grandma and her pals as a way to unwind after bingo night, knitting has become popular with a new generation. You can knit some pretty nifty and impressive gifts, for a super low price. There are some super easy tutorials online to get you started, and your sister will love that bulky (imperfect) scarf you made while you sat in front of the TV at night.
5. Sugar scrub
Give the gift of a glowing complexion with a homemade sugar scrub. Again, a good scrub is easy to make, and you probably have all the ingredients already lying around in your cupboard. You can find a bunch of easy recipes online, but they mostly include sugar (duh), coconut oil, essential oils, and a few other extras depending on what type of scrub you’re making (Pumpkin pie scrub? Vanilla latte scrub? The options are endless!). Pop your creation in a cheap jar and your lucky recipient will be looking their dewy best, plus you’ll reach beauty guru status amongst your friends.
If your brother has been dropping hints for his birthday and a hand-made candle probably won’t cut it, a Nimble personal loan can help you spoil him with that VR headset he won’t shut up about. A Nimble cash loan can help you treat your loved ones (or, yourself!) whenever those special occasions come around.
